Peter Makredes of Las Vegas had an ambitious Memorial Day mission: Run 100 miles in 24 hours to raise money and awareness for veterans suicide. Why? “They did their job protecting us, now it is our job to protect them,” he said. He set up a fundraising page through Mission 22, a non-profit that provides counseling to veterans. Then, the night before Memorial Day, he packed up his supplies — including plenty of food and an extra pair of shoes — and set off to complete 225 laps around Exploration Peak Park. Onlookers cheered as he went by again, and again, and again. Some even joined him for a few laps. When he finally reached that 100-mile mark, he had raised more than $17,000. Makredes says he hopes to make it an annual tradition and may even add (gulp) more miles.
