Who remembers that old tv show “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader”? Well, we might have met our match with this brilliant 7th grader, Rory Hu.
When she learned about the global decline of honeybees and how pesticide destroys honey beesâ learning and memory, Rory Hu along with help of a local beekeeper, set out an experiment to mollify these effects of pesticide. She created artificial flowers tinged with caffeine and a food supplement called T-Polyphenol. Her experiment worked. Huânot yet a teen when she started her researchâwon the Department of Defense STEM Talent Award of $10,000 for her experiment at the 2022 Broadcom MASTERS, a national science and engineering competition for middle school students. âKnowing that I would even be able to have a small part in [solving the problem],â she says, âit would be extremely gratifying to me.â
Way to go Rory! ?
