Derick Smith’s brother Jake passed away when he was just 13 years old. His family decided to donate Jake’s organs, but they never met the recipients. + Years later, Derick’s fiancee Katy decided to surprise him with a unique gift on their wedding day. It took Katy more than a year, but eventually, she managed to find Jake’s heart recipient – Gracie Wilkinson – and invited her to the wedding. + “I was shocked that she was selfless enough to kind of share her wedding day with me because even though it was for Derick it was huge for me as well,” Gracie commented. + On their special day, Gracie gave Derick one more thing – a keychain with an image of Jake’s heartbeat from an EKG. + “What it was like to hear his heartbeat was a flood of different emotions,” Derick commented. “There’s not a word to describe it. She gave me the gift of closure.”
