DeAngelo Williams, an NFL runningback with the Pittsburg Steelers, has experienced great sorrow in his young life due to the loss of his mom and four aunts to breast cancer. In memory of all those lost, he has become a fierce and passionate advocate for all those  fighting the disease as well as the survivors. We salute him for using the high profile NFL platform to make a real impact in the fight against breast cancer. Most recently, DeAngelo pledged to pay for 53 mammograms at  local hospitals. According to AOL.com:
Williams announced in early October that his nonprofit organization, The DeAngelo Williams Foundation, will cover the cost of 53 mammograms at hospitals located in Charlotte, North Carolina and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The number 53 is significant as it represents each year of his mother’s life. According to For The Win, “The median cost of a mammogram is $243, so this is an estimated value of $12,879, but it’s priceless in terms of early breast cancer detection.”
